Cool or Crisp by Brenda J Wood

Right now, it’s cool to have a platform, but has your writing taken second place? Is it no longer sharp and crisp?

I ask this question.

“Do you really trust God with your writing career?”

You answer.

“Of course I trust God.”

I ask.

“Then why do you spend hours every day jumping on the latest platform bandwagon?”

You answer.

“Well, everyone says I must have a platform.”

I ask.

“Do you want platform or stage? A platform is a raised level of flooring that makes a performer more visible. A stage is a platform used by performers. Are you a performer or a writer? Are you a performer who writes or a writer who performs?”

You answer.

“I don’t know.”

I ask.

“What if you let God direct your path and lead you to the place he wants you to be?”

You answer.

“I do that already.”

I ask.

“Then why do you spend 10 hours on platform for every hour of writing?  Why do you toot your own horn instead of tooting your own words?”

You answer.

“But that is what I must do to sell my book.”

I ask.

“Is your goal to write or to sell?”

You answer.

“People need to hear my words.”

I ask.

“Do you think God doesn’t know who needs to hear what?”

You answer.

“But God expects me to do my part.”

I ask.

“Do all your bright marketing ideas come from God or from the latest platform gurus?”

You answer.

“Oh.”

I ask.

“Why are we pretending to be something we are not? A writer is called to write. Everything else is only a sideline.”

And then you say …
