Chapter Two — We Need the Bible
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly
furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:16–17)The
Bible has been given to us by God to lead and guide us in the
affairs of life. Everything we need to be the people God wants us to
be is wrapped up in the word of God. To succeed, or prevail, in
life, there is nothing we need outside of Genesis to Revelation. It
may be encouragement, correction, support, guidance, training, or
wisdom to do what we need to do and do it right—all is in the Bible.
The word of God according to II Timothy will teach us all we need to
be successful in life. The word of God will also correct us when we
are going in the wrong direction. We don’t have to be highly
accomplished in whatever God calls us to do, because the word of God
will train us. If the word of God can do all these things for us,
what else do we need?
Some time ago a man was sick and he began to pray. He kept on
praying for healing, but healing never came. The lack of healing was
not because God couldn’t heal him but because sin in his life was
preventing him from getting healed. One day he picked up his Bible
and, at random, opened it to 1 John 1. God used verse 9 to tell him
exactly what he needed to do to be healed. God said to him in that
verse, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive
us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” He knew
right away that the sin he had been hiding from his wife must be
confessed for him to be healed. It was a hard thing to do, but he
did it, and he was healed. God used His word to correct him. This is
just one example of what the word of God will do for us.
The Bible says in II Peter 1:20–21, “Knowing this first, that no
prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of
God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” The word of God is
not of human inspiration but of God.
I talked to a man about God some time ago, and I asked him, “Do you
believe God exists?”
He said “Yes.”
“Do you believe in Jesus Christ?” I asked
“Yes,” and he added, “I even have a copy of the Bible, but I don’t
really believe the Bible.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s written by men.”
Yes the Bible was written by men, but that’s only partially true.
Satan had made this man believe that the Bible was written by men
and therefore was an inspiration of men. The word of God was written
by men, but it’s not an inspiration of men.
The word of God is the inspiration of God. God delivered every
message and every word in the Bible, but He used men to write it
down. The Bible says that the holy men of God are moved by the Holy
Spirit to write the Scriptures. It has never been an inspiration of
humans, and it will never be.
Because the Bible is the inspiration of God, we can expect God to
speak to us through it, and whatever He speaks to us, we can surely
expect the manifestation of that in our lives.
Also, because it is the inspiration of God and not the will of man,
the Bible can never be outdated or obsolete. It is for past
generations, this generation, and generations to come. The word of
God is alive. It can change anyone or any situation because it’s not
a human-made book but an inspiration of God.
Anything that’s born from the spirit of God has the potential to
change someone’s life for good, and that’s what makes the Bible
special. Every word in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, stems
from the Spirit. The Bible says in Psalm 12:6, “The words of the
Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified
seven times.” For the word of the Lord to be pure, it must be from
heaven alone and not from this corrupt world. And that’s why it’s
still changing people’s lives today as it did in past generations.
And it will change your life too, in Jesus’ name.
The Bible says in John 1:1-3, “In the beginning was the word, and
the word was with God, and the word was God. The same was in the
beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was
not any thing made that was made.”
The word of God is so important that God could not create without
it. Everything God created was created through His word. The Bible
says in Genesis 1 that He created nothing without speaking out His
word. Every time He wanted to create something, He would speak, and
whatever He wanted would be. When He said, “Let there be light,”
light came and darkness couldn’t exist any longer. The Bible also
says in Psalm 33:6–9, “By the word of the Lord were the heavens
made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He
gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up
the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all
the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and
it was done; he commanded and it stood fast.”
When God was ready to send Jesus into the world in human flesh, the
Bible says that God spoke. He spoke His word through His angel, and
as Mary believed and received the message that was brought to her,
Jesus Christ was conceived and born for us.
Why did God create everything through His word? Because the word of
God alone is the only thing that can and will stand the test of
time; it is the only thing that nothing can change or uproot. The
word of God stands forever. And God has given us His word also to
create so that we can have the same result He had. So how do we use
it to have the same result God had?
