Nathan Harms - has served on the InScribe executive and as Newsletter Editor. He is the founder and Executive Director of Utmost Christian Writers Foundation and a fervent lover of poetry. He looks forward to new discoveries and new poetry at the Fall Conference.

Workshop - Session #1 is for poets of all levels, with the most value to newer poets or to writers who have been “thinking poetically” yet are uncertain how to venture into a form of writing which is unfamiliar to them. We will discuss what “thinking poetically” means, a good basis for a poem, how to begin and develops a poem, and to know when it is complete. Time will be given for putting ideas onto paper and writers should leave this workshop with a better understanding of how they can make poetry a part of their writing experience.

Workshop - Session #2 is a “hands on” workshop focusing on active writing and a minimum of lecture and plenty of opportunity to write and receive guidance from the instructor and other participants. Be expected to share and discuss your work-in-progress. Bring your own work or use material provided as “starter” material.

• POETRY

Lisa Wojna spent 10 years as a journalist and editor in community newspapers before writing her first nonfiction book, Canadian Inventions: Fantastic Feats and Quirky Contraptions, in 2004. Her work has appeared in newspapers and magazines across Canada, and on CBC Radio. In 2003, a life-changing trip to Ethiopia gave her an opportunity to write several articles about the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and its work in Africa. Lisa now writes nonfiction books for several Canadian publishers, authoring more than a dozen titles, and coauthoring several others.

Workshop “Writing Nonfiction: the World is Your Stage” — The world is your stage and the blank page a gift of possibilities. Learn to use what you know to increase your writing opportunities, tap into markets you hadn't previously considered, and pitch a winning idea to a potential publisher. Whether you're hoping to earn a wage from your writing, or just wanting to discover a place to share your words with readers, this workshop will get your creative juices flowing.

• NONFICTION

Brenda Leyland started blogging more than two years ago and saw this as a great way to develop her craft and the discipline to write more regularly. After signing up with Blogger, she challenged herself to write 100 posts in 100 days and invited her friends to come visit. To her joy people came and left comments, not realizing that her blog would connect her to a community of kindred spirits and give her a place where God could use her to touch people. Hooked on blogging, Brenda posts regularly on three personal sites and contributes to InScribe Writers Online where she is the current moderator. She looks forward to increasing that site’s blogosphere of influence.

Workshop “Write in Cyberspace - Blogging Basics and Beyond” — One of the joys of blogging is its immediacy. You write, you edit, you post, you connect! As a workshop speaker, Brenda's goals are to get you excited about the possibilities available through writing online and to equip you with enough know-how so you can feel confident to begin — or to develop to another level in your own blogging experience.

2009 Fall Conference • What the Lord Requires • September 25-26, 2009

Find out more at her website.

Kathleen Gibson

A veteran speaker, writer, and newspaper columnist, Kathleen Gibson’s words have appeared in numerous publications and media outlets globally, including Readers Digest and CBC Radio. Having avoided book writing for as long as possible, she jokes that God dumped her inside one: Her recent book, West Nile Diary (publication date March-09, Bastian Books) chronicles her clergyman husband Rick’s (ongoing) battle with West Nile neurological disease, and their subsequent journey through loss and healing.

Kathleen recently left her position of editor at Prairies North Magazine and now calls herself the reluctant author of West Nile Diary. She and Rick, live in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. They have two adult children, three grand-beans, and no pets.

Kathleen is presenting the Keynote and Plenary at our Conference, as well as one workshop.

Secrets to Effective Personal Writing — Oh me, oh my! May I really use "I"? It's the pronoun most college-trained students learned not to use. But personal writing is a powerful means of both discovering and revealing life-changing truth. You'll learn a personal writer's most valuable resources, what every personal essay must include and three things your writing must prove to editors.

Through her talented agent, Bonnie signed a two-book contract, with more books on the way.

As a speaker, her only goal is to show you how to grab hold of the dreams God gave you and turn them into joyous reality. And have a ball doing it. Bonnie is Doing two workshops and the closing session at our Conference.
