FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
|
How do the workshops function? You simply enroll in the workshop of your choice and pay your registration fee by mail. Just before the start of the workshops, you’ll receive an e-mail message telling you that you have been subscribed to a special group e-mail list. On that list will be up to nine other participants (sometimes less, occasionally more) and your facilitator. Only those enrolled in the course will be able to send to and receive messages from this list. You will receive instructions upon enrolling telling you how to send messages, how to e-mail your assignments, and who to contact when you have questions. The workshop will be conducted through the mailing list, and you’ll receive all your workshop materials right in your e-mail box. Do classes meet at certain times? No. You are enrolling in an e-mail correspondence course conducted by private mailing list. You will be able to read the lessons, assignments and feedback from your facilitator, as well as completed assignments and comments from your fellow students, right in your e-mail inbox. You can attend class in your pajamas, if you like! What do I need to take the workshop? The ability to send and receive e-mail, any books or materials required for the workshop (see the description for each course for any required materials), and your enthusiasm for writing. Do I need a password or access to a special website? Classes are taught entirely through an e-mail list. Some instructors may host optional chats at Yahoo Groups. So while you do not need any special password to take our courses, if your instructor decides to host a chat, she or he will provide all the information you need to participate at that time. Can I get college credits for these workshops? Probably not. Our workshops are educational in nature, but not academic. We call them “workshops” because they’re similar to seminars taught at our writer’s conferences or one-day workshops, but rather than cram everything into an hour or two, or into one day, you will learn over a four to six week period. What can I expect from the workshop? What do I get out of this? Each week you will receive one to three lessons from your facilitator. This will include materials about specific writing techniques and concepts. You will also receive one or more assignments, which you will complete and e-mail back to the list. Your facilitator will then provide feedback on your completed assignment, offering suggestions and pointing out your writing strengths, as well as where you could improve. We also encourage all students to comment on the work of fellow students, making this an interactive, supportive and educational process. How many workshops can I sign up for? What do they cost? A four-week workshop costs $60. Six weeks would be $90. (Figure about $15 per week although you will pay the total, not a weekly payment.) Starting dates will change throughout the year, so you will have several opportunities. Try not to take on more than you can handle. Set aside time rather than sign up only to find out that you are too busy.
