(An Incurable Passion to Write)

Welcome To My World!

Thank you for visiting today. If you have a few moments, check out a few of the links here and some of my writing. Who knows? Maybe we will become good friends.

I invite you to come explore with me and check out a little bit of my history, a portion of my credentials and perhaps a paragraph or two of my writing samples. In fact, why not go grab a cup of your favourite beverage and sit a spell? I’d love to ‘chat.’

I write, I teach, I conduct workshops for children and beginning writers, I sell used books and a few unique promotional items for writers. And if that isn’t enough to keep me busy, I love to blog. Here are a few links if you like to read blogs.

A little bit of me...

Many moons ago, I started on a career path as a nurse, then I announced to my happy hubby on graduation day that I was great with child. There went any notion of working for five years and settling into the nice white picket fence package.

Two children later, I suddenly realized that I didn't like blood. So I took some courses and switched from nursing to teaching. As life would have it, I shifted my focus and also took a myriad of courses on writing and soon realized that this was something I was destined to do along with my teaching. God was poking me in some interesting directions, I soon discovered. I have been writing professionally now for over 20 years and I am amazed at how the fire still burns within!

I am so blessed when I stop and think about it. I love children and I love writing. And what I truly love is writing for children. So my days consist of writing when I can and teaching when I am scheduled to do so! My students are a great source of fodder as I observe and listen and take copious amounts of mental notes.

In 2008 - I was absolutely flabbergasted when my sweet doctor told me on April 24th that the news wasn't good. I thought she was going to tell me that I was stepping into early menopause or the like. I was ill prepared to hear the words 'You have cancer.'

Needless to say, it was a great turning point in my life, but when I look back I am absolutely head over heels amazed at the lessons I was able to learn throughout my year of endless tests, excruciating chemotherapy and moments of despair.

God was on the throne and was doing a mighty work in my heart and soul. He was preparing me. He was tilling the soil of my soul and getting me ready to share my journey. The words that poured forth from my heart to my mind to my fingers to my keyboard, amazed me. It's not that they were profound or magnificent. It was just that they were so clear and real. My soul was laid bare and I was still.

One of my favourite Scripture verses was Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” Never before did that verse become so real to me as when I was going through my cancer journey. I learned what it truly meant to be still...

So I plod on. God is my refuge and my strength and I am sure loving the ride right now!

Staying Connected

As the Ontario Representative for Inscribe Christian Writer’s Fellowship, and market columnist for Fellowscript, I help promote this cross Canada writer's organization and offer a regular writer’s word challenge on the member listserve. I also contribute regularly to the ICWF blog.

My membership with The Word Guild, a body of professional writers, has allowed me to make many contacts and to assist in the promotions of some of our Canadian authors. I am a regular contributor to the TWG blog.

And My Books

Jailhouse Rock

The jailhouse rocked and the jailer's life was shaken.  He was certain his prisoners had escaped and he would have to pay the price with his life. To his surprise, Paul and Silas and all the prisoners remained. The jailer's life was about to be shaken up in an entirely new way!

Jesus Washes Peter's Feet

Jesus took on the menial task of washing the disciple's feet to emphasize humility and to provide an example of selfless service. Peter objects to Jesus putting himself in this position which is usually relegated to a slave. But Peter soon learns that it is a necessary part of Jesus' plan.

“A Mother's Intuition" - Chicken Soup for the Christian Woman's Soul - Page 84

I still marvel at the power of prayer and the sense of urgency that flooded my mind and heart that morning when my daughter flipped the car three times and struck a hydro pole. This emotional story reminds me that the Almighty Protector shielded my Amanda and sent His angels to protect her, just as I had prayed.

The Point of Grace - A One Act Play in 7 Scenes.

Country Acres Nursing Home, although a more likely place to encounter death, becomes the backdrop for renewed hope and revival as the message of Easter unfolds. Teetering between faith and frustration, Grace Popponoski, an elderly resident, seeks a way to handle Rebecca. Rebecca is a troublesome staff member who took the job because she thought it would look good on her resume. Rebecca learns, through Grace's testimony and another staff member, that there is a God who loves her. This play glorifies Jesus Christ as our risen Savior through dialogue, song and Scripture. The message remains... that the shed blood is for all. We can face tomorrow, because He lives!

Sshhh... God is Speaking

"In the beginning..." God created the canvas, prepared the stage and set the scene for the greatest drama ever. Jesus the Master Story Teller, shared parables, provided object lessons, and used dramatic detail to teach, to encourage and to cause His followers to reflect upon the mighty power of God. Creativity is an attribute from God. Ministry in the form of the dramatic arts allows us the opportunity to be witnesses for Christ and to use our gifts to present the truth of God's Word in a dramatic way.
Sshhh...God is Speaking offers a unique "to be picked up at any time" type of book that can be used at meetings, at rehearsals, as a relaxation tool to calm the butterflies prior to a performance, or as a private devotional.
God has set the stage. Auditions are over. The cast has been selected.  Where does everyone fit into the big picture? "Sshhh...God is Speaking" will shed some light for readers and hearers and doers and even  dreamers as the focus is upon the Good News of Jesus Christ; a focus that will catch the attention of youth  and adults who are interested in Christian dramatic arts.

Words of Wisdom

If I had to offer three wise directives to writers they would include the following:
  • Cut it down by half and leave nothing out (Instruction given to me by a kindly editor)

  • He who asks a question feels a fool for five minutes. He who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.(Old Chinese Proverb)

  • “Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I'll remember. Involve me, I'll understand.” (Old Chinese Proverb)
