- Marcia Laycock is pleased to
report that she has won first place in the Spring Poetry contest at
Utmost Christian Writers.

(started at 6:00 p.m.) They gave away a copy of Marcia's book, One Smooth
Stone.

- Mary Haskett's book, Reverend
Mother's Daughter, won bronze in the
IPPY
award (Independent Publisher Book Awards) in the USA. IPPY had over
3000 entries in various categories from the USA, Canada, & 16 other
countries. this book was also shortlisted for The Word Guild award in the
Life Stories category (see below). Mary has received notice that her book is
ranked 18th out of 50 for books published by small independent publishers.
The statistics are taken from Amazon, Barns & Noble and CBD rankings. People
have told her how much this book is blessing them. Mary says, “I'm still in
awe of all that has transpired and KNOW that all praise belongs
to God.” Congratulations, Mary!

2008 ZOETROPE: ALL-STORY SHORT FICTION CONTEST |

Zoetrope: All-Story, the story and art
quarterly founded by Francis Ford Coppola and a finalist for the 2008 National
Magazine Award for fiction, announces their 2008 Short Fiction Contest.

JUDGE:
Elizabeth McCracken, National Book Award-finalist and Zoetrope: All-Story
contributor, will award the top prizes.
PRIZES: First prize is $1,000; second prize $500; and third
prize $250.
LITERARY AGENCIES: The winners and seven finalists will be
considered for representation by the William Morris Agency, ICM, Regal Literary,
the Elaine Markson Literary Agency, Inkwell Management, Sterling Lord Literistic,
and the Georges Borchardt Literary Agency.
DEADLINE: All entries must be
postmarked by October 1, 2008. Results will be announced at the website
December 1, 2008, and in the Spring 2009 issue of the magazine.
LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Janice Macdonald’s “The
Plainness of My Fall” was published as a special online supplement to the
Spring 2008 issue.
COMPLETE CONTEST GUIDELINES:
We accept all genres of literary fiction. Entries must be: unpublished; strictly
5,000 words or less; postmarked by October 1, 2008; clearly marked "Short
Fiction Contest" on both the story and the outside of the envelope; accompanied
by a $15 entry fee per story (make checks payable to AZX Publications). Please
include name and address on first page or cover letter only. There are no
formatting restrictions; please ensure only that the story is legible.
We welcome multiple entries ($15/story) and entries from
outside the U.S.; please send entry fee in U.S. currency or money order. While
we cannot return manuscripts, we will forward a list of the winning stories to
any entrant who includes an SASE; as well, we will e-mail contest updates to
anyone who provides an active e-mail address. Entrants retain all rights to
their stories.

The Word Guild Gala — twentieth annual awards

Mississauga, Ontario - A packed house celebrated the 2008 Canadian
Christian Writing Awards at World Vision headquarters in Mississauga with 38
winners in 31 categories, chosen from more than 230 entries. Winners received
awards in 14 short categories and 17 book categories. Herbie Kuhn, the in-house
announcer for the Toronto Raptors, skillfully emceed the evening and Canadian
singer/songwriter Jacob Moon provided musical entertainment.
High-profile winners in the book categories included Bruxy Cavey, teaching
pastor of The Meeting House in Oakville, Ontario, for The End of Religion;
founder of L'Arche, Jean Vanier of Trosly-Breuil, France, for Our Life
Together: A Memoir in Letters; James Houston of Vancouver for
Letters of Faith Through the Seasons; and William P. Young of Gresham,
Oregon, for The Shack: Where Tragedy Confronts Eternity, in the
contemporary novel category.
Retired Baptist pastor Eric E. Wright of Colborne, Ontario, was a double winner
for his first novel, a thriller titled The Lightning File. Carolyne
Aarsen of Neerlandia, Alberta, tied for best romance novel for All in One
Place with Linda Hall of Fredericton, New Brunswick, for Shadows in the
Mirror.
Paul M. Beckingham, a freelance writer, professor at Carey Theological College
and Canadian Armed Forces' chaplain, was a multiple-award winner for his
personal experience and inspirational articles. Jennifer Green, the faith and
ethics senior writer for The Ottawa Citizen, also won multiple awards for
her news and feature articles. Lorna Dueck, host of the television program
Listen Up, tied with Green in the general readership category for a column
published in the Globe and Mail.
Kevin Dautremont, a physician from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, won the 2008 Best
New Canadian Christian Author Contest sponsored by Castle Quay Books Canada for
his fiction manuscript, The Golden Conquest.
Connie Brummel Crook of Peterborough, Ontario, was awarded the Leslie K. Tarr
Award for outstanding career achievement for her nine young adult novels and
three children's picture books that portray Canadian history and are widely used
in public school classrooms and libraries.
The Partnership Award was presented to the arts organization Imago, for its
invaluable assistance in helping The Word Guild to get established during its
first six years of operation.
The Word Guild, the association that sponsors the contest, has a membership of
more than 325 writers and editors across Canada who write from a Christian
perspective and publish work in a variety of genres.

Mimico Summer Festival
— Books in the Park |
Presented by Mimico Baptist Church and Mimico Resident's Association, in Mimico,
Ontario, Canada.
New for 2008 is an invitation for authors and illustrators to promote their work
at Books In The Park. This is an opportunity for residents and local book
clubs to purchase books, meet you - the authors and illustrators, and have their
books signed.
Party in the Park has developed through the past 10 years to become a
truly inclusive neighborhood celebration. It is a way in which residents of this
neighborhood can meet one another and celebrate their community organizations,
businesses, resources and talents. Each year this event has grown and now an
estimated 1500 neighbors of all ages meet in Mimico Memorial Park to enjoy the
entertainment, sample the food and gather information from the many community
booths. In harmony with our Growing Greener theme this year, we would also like
to introduce local literary talent to the many avid readers of Mimico. For

How to Participate
A community committee will review and accept entrants on an ongoing basis from
entries received on or before the deadline date of June 27th, 2008.
Consideration will be given to, but not limited to entrants in close proximity
to the community and whose work supports the aims of the community festival.

Conditions of participation
* Mimico Summer Festival takes place on Tuesday August 5th, 2008 from 5:30 to

* Authors must bring copies of their books to sell to residents
* An assistant should accompany authors to facilitate sales and signing
* A limited number of tables, chairs and shelters will be available on a first
come first served basis
* All materials are the author's responsibility and are to be removed at the
conclusion of the event
* The event will take place rain or shine
* A community committee will make final decisions of acceptance
* Consideration will be given to authors in close proximity to Mimico (in the
southwest of Toronto)
* Consideration will be given to authors whose work supports the aims of the
community festival
* Submission deadline is June 27th, 2008

Barnes & Noble Book Clubs. Barnes & Noble has launched its online
book clubs which are free. This fall nearly 30 authors will lead
discussions of their books while book club moderators will focus
discussions. The site includes message boards, and users will be able to
create profiles, share lists of favorite books and authors, sign up for
e-mail updates and send messages to other users. "The new Book Clubs are
a natural extension of the thousands of book clubs at Barnes & Noble
stores nationwide," Marie Toulantis, CEO of B&N said in a statement.
"This new online community meets the needs of authors who are eager to
reach as broad an audience as possible, and our customers, who want to
interact with their favorite authors."

happenings in the publishing world including the recent announcement of the
Random House acquisition of Christian book publisher Multnomah Publishers,
to be integrated into their Inspirational line,
Waterbrook Press. The
Multnomah name will be retained as a separate imprint and will continue to
publish about 100 new titles annually. The purchase doubles the size of
WaterBrook's list, adding 600 titles to its existing base of 500.
